The President’s Fireside Chat is a sub-series of the President’s Speaker Series, focusing on local industry leaders and prominent alumni. Hosted by MSU Denver President Janine Davidson, Ph.D., the ongoing series provides an opportunity for an intimate experience for academic courses to engage with local leaders. The series offers a wide range of thought-provoking and conversation inducing ideas and topics. The Fireside Chat Series has featured such guests as Jenna M. Seidel, Adrian Miller and Commissioner Córdova, among others.

Fireside Chat with Chief Justice of the Colorado Supreme Court, Monica M. Márquez

Justice Monica M. Márquez was appointed to the Colorado Supreme Court in 2010. She began her term as Chief Justice in July 2024. Before joining the Court, Justice Márquez served in several roles at the Colorado Attorney General’s Office, including Assistant Solicitor General and Deputy Attorney General. Justice Márquez previously practiced general commercial litigation and employment law at Holme Roberts & Owen, LLP.  

Justice Márquez grew up in Grand Junction, CO. After graduating from Stanford University, she served in the Jesuit Volunteer Corps as a teacher and community organizer in Camden, NJ, and Philadelphia, PA, before earning her law degree at Yale Law School. Justice Márquez has served as a liaison justice to the Office of Attorney Regulation and its related committees, and as chair of the Colorado Supreme Court Standing Committee on Judicial Well-Being.  She currently leads the Colorado Judicial Department’s Workplace Culture Initiative.  

Justice Márquez regularly mentors students and aspiring young lawyers, including first-generation college students with Law School Yes We Can. Before joining the Court, Justice Márquez served on the boards of multiple bar associations and the Latina Initiative, and as Chair of the Denver Mayor’s LGBTQ Commission.
